Herring Gull Covered in Mysterious Contaminant

We’d probably have an unimpressed look on our face too if we were this Herring Gull. The poor bird was admitted covered head-to-toe in a mysterious contaminant, leaving his normally bright white feathers heavily stained and matted.

Judging by the colour of the residue on his feathers, we suspect a chimney or soot-covered surface may have been involved somewhere along the way. Whatever the cause, the result was the same – the gull was exhausted and unable to properly care for his feathers.

Why Clean Feathers Matter
For seabirds like gulls, healthy feathers are absolutely essential. They provide waterproofing, insulation, and the ability to fly properly. When feathers become coated in substances such as soot, oil, or other contaminants, birds can quickly struggle to stay warm, dry, and buoyant. Without help, many birds in this situation would continue to decline.

The First Step: A Much-Needed Bath
After carefully assessing his condition, our team gave this rather unhappy gull a much-needed bath to begin removing the contaminant from his feathers. We’re very pleased to say the transformation has already begun – his feathers are white again and he’s starting to look much more like himself. However, his recovery isn’t quite finished yet. He will need another bath to remove the remaining residue from his wings, followed by some time to allow his feathers to properly regain their natural waterproofing. This stage is important, as birds must be fully waterproof before they can safely return to the wild.

Every Gull Matters
Although Herring Gulls are still a familiar sight along our coasts and towns, they are actually listed on the UK Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern due to significant population declines. That means every single individual matters. By helping birds like this one recover and return to the wild, we’re not just helping one animal – we’re also playing a small part in protecting the future of the species.

Thank you to everyone who supports the work we do. Your kindness truly makes a difference.
