Unexpected Visitor: Sea Duck Found in a Stockport Garden
- March 2026
- Kirklees Valley Wildlife Rescue
Certainly not the sort of place you’d expect to find a bird that normally spends its life out at sea!
Even more unusual for us is that Scoters are very rarely seen in wildlife rescues. These ducks typically live far offshore or along coastal waters, spending most of their time on open sea. Because of this, they seldom come into contact with people or end up needing help inland. So it’s quite special – and a little surprising – for one to turn up so far from where he should be.
In Good Health Despite the Detour
The good news is that he arrived in excellent condition. He’s a very healthy weight, bright, alert, and showing all the signs of a strong bird. Apart from choosing a rather unusual landing spot, he appears perfectly well.
Our best guess is that recent windy weather may have blown him off course, pushing him inland where he eventually decided that the garden looked like a safe place to land and rest. Wildlife sometimes ends up in the strangest places after storms or strong winds. Or perhaps he simply thought the garden looked like a comfortable stopover!
A Species of Conservation Concern
Scoters are currently listed on the UK Red List of Birds of Conservation Concern due to significant long-term declines in their population. Although they are still seen offshore around the UK, their numbers have fallen enough in recent years to make every individual important.
A Short Stay Before Heading Home
For now, our unexpected visitor is having a short rest with us while we give him a quick check over and make sure everything is as it should be. If he continues to do well – which we’re expecting – he should be back where he belongs very soon, out on the open water.
Sometimes wildlife just takes a slightly unusual route before finding its way home again.
